The Arnolds Park Library Board met Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. in the Arnolds Park Library.
Members present were Mitch Brown, Joyce Burgeson, Barb Woodley, Diana Jensen and Librarian Kara Rice. Absent was Robb Keizer.
The minutes of July 9, 2014 were read, corrected and approved.
Review of policy on overdue items: Rice said the library's circulation policy needs to be updated. Currently eleven patrons from February - June have not returned checked out items. The staff has called and sent post card reminders with no response. Rice suggested a policy as follows: The staff will make overdue calls every other week. After two calls with no response, the patron will receive a letter. A sample letter was reviewed by the board and all agreed to use that format.
Policy for number of items allowed to be checked out: Rice said they have an unwritten policy to limit check out to six DVD's per cardholder. Discussion of allowing a family of three or more to check out ten DVD's. The board agreed this would be a fair policy. Rice will make a sign to post above the DVD shelf.
After some discussion the board members agreed that there should be no limit on the number of books checked out as long as the items were being returned in a timely manner.
Dickinson County Staff Day: Rice advised the State Directors are planning a seminar to update library directors and their staff on changes and general information. Rice felt it would be good for the library board members to also attend if available. She will let the board know when the date and time of the seminar has been set.
Programming: The Arnolds Park Fire Department has a projector and screen they will allow the library to use. Rice said she wanted to start a free family movie night. Perhaps the kids could come in their pajamas. The State Library advised there is a movie license that must be purchased for copyright protection. There are different fees for one, two, three, or four years license. The fee of $242 for one year would allow the library to show as many movies as they want. The board members agreed to get a one year license, then see what kind of attendance we get. It was suggested to approach the Library Foundation for help with purchase of the license.
Rice reviewed future programming ideas. A trick or treat night at the library is planned for Halloween with a spook house (not too scary) and show a movie. For Christmas, they have already scheduled Mr. and Mrs. Claus to come to the library and plan to show the movie "Polar Express" and serve hot chocolate just like in the movie.
Bills for August were presented in the amount of $1,621.10. Rice reviewed and explained the bills. Burgeson moved to approve the bills as presented. Brown seconded. All aye.
The next meeting will be held Wednesday, September 10, 2014.
