The Arnolds Park Library Board met Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. in the Arnolds Park Library.
Present were Barb Woodley, Mary Dreier, Mitch Brown, Diana Jensen, and library director Kara Rice. Absent was Robb Keizer.
The minutes of July 18, 2018 were read. Dreier moved to accept the minutes as read. Brown seconded. All aye.
Summer Reading Program Recap: Rice reported that 172+ kids registered and participated. 50 to 60 others attended at various times. A total of 13,310 books or chapters were read. Rice felt the large attendance was due in part to more home school moms that came in with their families, and also word of mouth. Rice said it was a learning experience. They ran out of books and prizes. They ordered more and any extra they can use next year. Instead of one big prize next year, she is thinking if you meet your goal, you get to do a big, special activity.
Scholastic Book Fair: Rice said it went well. $1800 in books were sold, so they have $800 in scholastic dollars to buy books next year.
Dreier suggested a winter activity could be a book exchange for adult books at the library. People could bring in books in good condition that they no longer want and pick up as many as they want at a nominal fee and pay at the door. Those who want to donate need to bring the books in a few days ahead of time, so the staff can go through them.
Library Accreditation: Rice gave the board members a copy of the new standards overview. She explained the state had added more standards. She also explained the difference in the three tiers of libraries:
Tier 1: The library is not automated. They have a part time staff. Hours are limited-they are not open all the time.
Tier 2: This library is trying to keep up with new required standards. For instance, they may be a certified library, but not handicapped accessible.
Tier 3: This library has the highest standards. They have funds to keep up with increasing needs and requirements. They have to be accredited. She mentioned there are four separate areas the library funding comes from.
When we send in our application for verification, we have to prove we met all the standards and requirements. The deadline for application is the end of February. Rice asked the board to bring their questions to next month's meeting. She will give us copies of current policies.
Library Board Continuing Education: The board members were to study Chapter 11 Working with the Library Director, from the Iowa Library Trustee's Handbook.
Bills were presented through August 8, 2018 in the amount of $3,928.01. Rice explained the City Credit Card bill was for the July 18th reading program held at Central Park. The Milford Library bill was our share of the cost to put on the Amish program. Rice reviewed the other expenses. There being no questions, Brown moved to accept the bills as presented. Dreier seconded. All aye.
